Product Information -

In the early days, the Republic of Texas Navy did not recognize the rank of Admiral.  Following the lead of the early United States Navy, the Texas Navy considered the title Admiral to be too "aristocratic" to be used by a Republic.

The rank of COMMODORE was chosen as the highest rank in the early Texas Navy.  Commonly, the Captains of the ships of the fleet would get together and "elect" one of their own members as "Commodore of the Fleet".  The Captain so elected, would then be entitled to fly the 'Broad Pendant of a Commodore", from the mast of his ship.

Early Merchant ships followed the same principle.  When several merchant ships were sailing as a "fleet" the captains would elect one of the own members, possibly the most experienced, as the Commodore of the Fleet.  When the fleet disolved, the rank was no longer in effect.  But the title "Commodore" often carried over as a "Honorary Title".

The pendants are printed on nylon, so the 'fly' in the slighest breeze.  They are custom made and follow the design originally adopted by the US Navy.  They were a tapering design, with the 'hoist' end of the flag about 25% wider than the swallowtail.  The flags were blue, with a single white 5 pointed star.
